Hope Equestrian Relay Organization, Inc.

My daughter Holly was a very active student in high school and as a Freshman at Eureka High she enrolled in a service learning class called EAST Seeking Solutions.  In this class the students identify problems in their communities and develop projects to help solve them.

Holly's grandma died of ovarian cancer in 2003 and Holly wanted to develop a project that would combine her love of horses with the fight against cancer.  As a result, she founded an event called HERO Ride For Life which is an equestrian relay on horseback to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Teams of horses and riders relay around our local race track to raise money for cancer research and support services.

The first event was in June 2005 and it has been organized by Holly and many volunteers annually since then, raising over $181,000 to date.  In 2009 my daughter formed a nonprofit organization to help other communities form HERO Ride For Life events and now, as a cancer survivor myself, I appreciate and take advantage of local support services.
